Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee)

I was offered a ticket to this at the last minute and had decide between it and Trust the Man (NYC set romantic comedy in the Woody Allen vein, stars David Duchovney and Maggie Gylenhaal). This movie has tons o' buzz and just took home the Golden Lion award for best picture at Venice. Ang Lee in fact had to hope on a plance back to Venice after arriving in TO this weekend and consequently missed the premiere screening here a couple of days ago. But Lee did show up to this screening and made a short introduction saying that he wanted to make a small movie after the Hulk (fiasco?). So yeah, I chose to go with the gay cowboys instead of the neurotic romantic Duchovney pic. Jake beat Maggie. Brokeback Mountain, or Bareback Mountain as I've been calling it, is a classic love story. It's sad and poignant and beutifully lensed. Heath Ledger was the standout for me as the man of few words. Anne Hathaway has a supporting role as the wife of Gylenhaal's character and she is fitting. Michelle Williams is Heath's long suffering wife and her performace, much like Heath's, is strongest without speaking. This is a tremendously sad and effective film. Reminded me some of the second If These Walls Could Talk installment (which also starred Williams).
